A sketch of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s wedding cake. ‘Royal’ icing, although long in existence, is thought to have received its name from its use on this cake.
Prince William and Catherine Middleton have announced their wedding cakes, a traditional, multi-tiered fruitcake iced in white and cream with 16 different Victorian-inspired symbolic floral motifs, designed by Fiona Cairns, and a chocolate biscuit cake made by British digestive biscuit company, McVities.

Kate is using floriography, or “the language of flowers,” in the cake design, a practice popular in the Victorian era.  She has chosen sixteen different flowers and foliage, including bridal roses, Sweet Williams, and the flowers of the four home nations, the English rose, Scottish thistle, Welsh daffodil, and Irish shamrock.
